You won’t want to miss out on making a Dancing Ghost that sways and moves around, seemingly on its own! And of course, we’ve got to make the all-time favorite…SLIME! Those are just two of the many science activities you’ll get to try out at “Spooktacular Science”. Join us this Saturday, October 30, 12:30-4:30.

Celebrate National Chemistry Week 2010
Posted by: | CommentsThis year’s “Behind the Scenes with Chemistry” theme celebrates the chemistry of special effects and magic.
Join us this evening at Gateway to Science, and discover how Chemistry is everywhere, whether prominent as a science fair project or tucked behind the scenes of a movie set or book. Explore the special effects in movies to appreciate that it is not magic, but rather common chemical concepts which explain the mystery behind the “magic” that is shown.
Current shows such as MYTHBUSTERS and books such as The Science of Harry Potter bring behind scenes science to prominent view. If you are a scientist at heart go to American Chemical Society-Chemistry for Life website and learn how sign up for a free kit on “How to Be A Chemistry Ambassador” , you can also download a free hands-on activity newspaper.
Each year National Chemistry Week reaches millions of people with positive messages about the contributions of chemistry.
National Chemistry Week is a program of the American Chemical Society’s Office of Volunteer Support!
We are expecting a large crowd! Join in the celebration of NCW 2010! Remember the show starts at 7:pm. Thank you Scott Weigum -you are the most important part of this event !

See “Hollywood Magic” at Chemistry Demo Night!

“Magic is what we used to call science before we understood it!” Imagine being a movie director before the days of computer generated imagery (CGI). Many of the scenes that required special effects were the result of some sort of scientific demonstration. From explosions going off as Godzilla trounces through a small-scale version of a town to water changing into a blood red color in some creepy horror show, movie sets were full of chemistry. On Tuesday, October 19th I would like to show you the way I perceive some of these special effects through chemistry demonstrations. You will see liquids turn different colors, ice start on fire, eggs explode, and many more demonstrations the way I would do it if I worked in Hollywood.

Come to Chemistry Demo Night on Tuesday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. It’s going to be amazing! And it’s free!
