Do you have a child of age 3 to 5? They are probably already curious about the world around them. Help them answer some of their probing questions by bringing them to “Preschool Science”. Every Saturday in February, we’ll be providing a time of fun, hands-on science exploration for parent-child pairs. The activities and games are specifically designed with preschoolers in mind, so don’t miss out on this unique opportunity of discovery.

Lunar Eclipse on Monday Night!
Posted by: | CommentsDon’t miss it! This will be the northernmost total lunar eclipse for MANY years! That’s because it’s happening so close to the Winter Solstice, the day when the Sun is farthest south in the sky.
In the Central Time Zone, the excitement will start at about 12:30 a.m. on Monday night (early Tuesday morning), when a partial eclipse begins. The total eclipse will start at about 1:40 a.m., and will last until about 2:50 a.m. This will be followed by another partial eclipse until about 4:00 a.m.
We normally see the Moon illuminated because the Sun’s light reflects off the Moon’s surface. What’s a lunar eclipse? It’s when the Earth gets in the way of the light traveling from the Sun to the Moon, casting the Earth’s shadow on the Moon’s surface. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is on the exact opposite side of the Earth as the Sun. This can only happen during a full moon, and only when the Moon, Earth, and Sun line up perfectly.
By the way, this is very different (and much more rare) than a “new moon”, which happens about once a month. A “new moon” is still illuminated by the Sun…just on the opposite side from the side of the Moon we see. We see the dark side (which blends into the blackness around it).
For more information on the eclipse, check out NASA’s Science News website.
Enjoy, and dress warm!

Gateway to Science Needs Exercise Bikes!
Posted by: | Comments
Gateway to Science needs used/new exercise bikes for two exhibits. We are looking for a Schwinn Airdyne and a Recumbent bike to replace the “Pedal Power” exhibit that is getting old and unreliable. Two new exhibits will be developed to provide our visitors with even more fun science discovery! If you have an exercise bike that you wish to donate to develop an exhibit, please contact me at 701-258-1975 or email beth@gscience.org.

The selected delegates must not only demonstrate academic achievement in science, but also show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership.”
This amazing camp will be held at the Monongahela Natl. Forest in West Virginia this coming July.
