New Camps for this Summer!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I just had to share with you how excited I am for this summer’s science camps at Gateway to Science. I think my favorite will be “The Science of Art”. Participants in this camp will, for example, learn the science of making their own paper and paint, and then they’ll use their paper and paint to create a work of art! Participants will also get to learn the science of how drums make different sounds while making their own drum to take home. And this is just the beginning! It makes me wish I was a kid again just so I could sign up!

Gateway to Science is offering 4 other new camps, too: “Engineer That!”, “Science Unplugged”, “Lego Design Camp”, and “Brainteasers and Games”. Each of these offers brand new, fun, hands-on activities. These are in addition to the returning favorites of “Lego Camp” and “Space Camp”. Check them out!

Gateway to Science will be open Noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 22, Saturday, April 23, and Monday, April 25.

Our hands-on exhibits gallery is a great place to bring visiting family members and friends who are looking for a fun children’s museum and science center to explore. While you’re here, please consider purchasing a membership, which will allow admission for a full year as well as discounts on educational programs. We honor ASTC memberships.

NASA is now accepting applications from students who will be in the 9 – 12th grades during the 2011-2012 academic year for INSPIRE, The Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience.

Johnson Space Center is actively recruiting students for our 8 state region of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Texas.

INSPIRE is designed to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. The centerpiece of INSPIRE is an Online Learning Community (OLC) which provides students opportunities to interact with peers, NASA engineers and scientists though grade level educational activities, discussion boards and live chats. Students selected for the OLC also have the option to be considered for unique grade-appropriate experiences that will occur during the summer of 2012 at NASA facilities and participating universities. These summer experiences provide students with a hands-on opportunity to investigate education and careers in STEM disciplines. More details can be found on the 2011 NASA INSPIRE Flier and by following the links below.

The deadline date is June 30, 2011. NASA will make selections for the program in September.

For more information about INSPIRE, visit:
http://www.nasa.gov/education/INSPIRE

To apply for the program, visit:

Please share this information with any students you know who would benefit from this experience.
