Gateway to Science has often been referred to as “the best kept secret in Bismarck.” Maybe everyone hasn’t experienced the unique, hands-on fun of discovery in our exhibits gallery yet. Maybe they’ve missed our free family events. Maybe having “science” in our name makes people think that the gallery is only for students. Whatever the reason, it’s time to share the “secret” of Gateway to Science with your friends and family.

I encourage families looking for a fun place to spend time together to stop in and experience the excitement for themselves. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of interactive exhibits, including “Use Your Brain,” “Simple Machines,” “H20,” “Light & Color” and too many others to mention. While you’re here, don’t forget to check out our Painted Lady Butterfly habitat and say hello to Krypto, our visiting Bearded Dragon.

A Chef Showdown will feature a rematch between Mort Bank, the 2010 Champion, and Aaron Bank, the 2009 Champion. “Einstein on Wine” will also feature beer and wine presentations by Dr. Robert Bates, live and silent auctions, test tube raffle and dessert buffet.

Tickets go on sale October 1. Cost is $40 for Members and $50 for Non-Members. This year, we are offering a special “Members Only” rate for couples – two tickets for $75.

Stay tuned for more details, but just to peak your interest, here’s a picture of one of the items that will be featured in the live auction. This stunning hand-carved wood duck by Master Carver Frank Koch is valued at $3,000.

Mark your calendar, call your friends and plan to join us for this fun adults only event. You won’t want to miss the excitement!

Is it on your calendar? Gateway to Science is hosting International Observe the Moon Night on Saturday, October 8th. The fun will start at moonrise (5:28 pm) and go until 8:28 pm. This free event will include outdoor guided moon viewing, so dress for the weather and bring your binoculars, or share one of the pairs here. We’ll also have a telescope set up! And of course, one of the best things about moon gazing is how many features your eyes can see without any magnification at all. There will also be indoor activities, including some full moon stories and a little time traveling. Join us, and moon enthusiasts around the world, for International Observe the Moon Night!

Many thanks to Barnes and Noble for hosting another fabulous bookfair in support of Gateway to Science! We appreciate everyone who came to the Bismarck location on Saturday. The families that stopped in the children’s section were treated to “Pop Bottle Science” experiments with Frank Koch, assisted by Chris Riedman and Jared Sarsten. It was fun to see so many children discovering something new about science! AND… a percentage of your purchases will be donated to our field trip scholarship fund.

If you were not able to attend the bookfair, you can still support Gateway to Science with online purchases through September 30. Visit bn.com/bookfair and enter Book Fair ID #10540565 at the checkout. Please help us spread the word by sharing the link with your friends. Thank you for your support!

Gateway to Science is looking for applicants to be Center Guides in our gallery! This can be a great part time job for high school or college students-but please keep in mind that applicants must be at least 16 years old. Where else can you have a job that involves feeding butterflies, building rockets, and being hands-on with all of our exhibits, all while wearing our popular and stylish labcoat? If this sounds interesting, you can find our application online. Completed applications can be dropped off at Gateway to Science or e-mailed to Meredith. Perhaps we’ll see you in a labcoat soon!

As our school-aged scientists get more involved in their new academic year, I want to let them know about some scientific contest opportunities they may be eligible for. There are two NASA-sponsored microgravity contests for students in grades 5-12, DIME & WING. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has an essay contest, also for 5th-12th graders, about being a Cassini Scientist for a Day. The American Museum of Natural History has a Young Naturalist Awards program for students in grades 7-12. Visit the linked websites for information about these contests and their eligibility and submission requirements. These are just a few of the contests that are out there – interested students should talk to their science teachers for information about other competition opportunities!
