Gateway to Science will host the 13th Annual Environmental Festival for 5th grade classrooms in March of 2012. Last year, over 1000 students, teachers, and chaperones participated in the event. We opened 2012 registration to area 5th grade teachers on Monday afternoon, and within just 48 hours, all but a few of the spots have filled. We are very excited by the enthusiastic response!

We have also put out a call to presenters for the festival, and there is still room for a few more. If you or someone you know is interested, please fill out a Presenter Registration Form or contact me with questions.

The Environmental Festival is presented to students absolutely FREE, thanks to sponsors that provide financial support and presenters, assistants, and guides that volunteer their time. We appreciate their help in making this event possible each spring!

Aaron Bank, Two-time Chef Showdown Champion

Gateway to Science proudly announces the winner of the Einstein on Wine 2011 Chef Showdown…Aaron Bank! It was a tough battle for the two time champion title, between Aaron and his father, Mort Bank.

The guests were hotly divided as to who would come out the champion, there were definite favorites coming into the showdown. Guests were talking about the dishes before they even made it to the table as the aromas from the kitchen were wafting through the Frances Leach High Prairie Arts & Science Complex.

We thank you for joining us in our evening of fun and food and wine. We are already looking forward to next year’s showdown!

Gateway to Science is a great place to spend some holiday time off from work or school, but please note that we have a modified work week so our employees can also enjoy Thanksgiving with their families.

We will be closing our gallery EARLY at 5 pm on Wednesday, November 23. The gallery and office will both be CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day. On Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26, our gallery will be open regular hours from noon to 5 pm, but the office will be closed.

Also to accomodate the Thanksgiving holiday, Preschool Discovery Hour will not meet this Wednesday, November 23, or Saturday, November 26. If you are looking for something fun to do on Friday or Saturday between eating, shopping, games, or whatever else you have planned, bring your friends and family to Gateway to Science!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We recently caught up with Mort Bank, 2010 Einstein on Wine Chef Showdown Champion, and asked him about his challenger this year, Aaron Bank, 2009 Chef Showdown Champion. The two master chefs will compete at Einstein on Wine on Friday, November 18.

Q: Do you think Aaron has a chance to win this year?
A: “Well, the kid thinks he can beat the old man, but I don’t think it’ll happen.”
Q: Why should Einstein on Wine guests vote for you?
A: “Well my food will be better! Also, they should vote for the underdog. I’m the one with no culinary training. Besides, I’m 40 years older than Aaron and it may be the last thing I ever win.”
Q: Are you aware that this year’s winner will be the first repeat champion in the Chef Showdown?
A: “Yes, and if there’s going to be a repeat champion, it should be me!”

It’s shaping up to be a challenging rematch! For more information or to purchase tickets for Einstein on Wine, visit our website.
