Happy New Year 2012 from Gateway to Science!
The task for the 2012 Widget Contest, taking place February 7 and sponsored by Gateway to Science and the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers, Chapter 3, has just been announced! This year’s task is to knock over a pyramid of three cups. The three cups must be in a standard pyramid formation to start, and all three cups must be knocked off their rims by an impact, not just moved or pulled apart. Teams can register and pick up their box of materials, including more specific guidelines for the contest, between January 5 and January 25.
“There are many hypotheses in science which are wrong. That’s perfectly all right; they’re the aperture to finding out what’s right. Science is a self-correcting process. To be accepted, new ideas must survive the most rigorous standards of evidence and scrutiny.”
The hands-on science gallery at Gateway to Science will be open during regular hours (noon-7 pm Monday-Thursday and noon-5 pm Friday & Saturday) over the holidays, including New Year’s Eve, EXCEPT on Saturday, December 24, when we will be closed all day for Christmas Eve. Our office hours will be slightly modified, so please call us at 701.258.1975 if you want to find out if we’re here before you drop by. If you’re looking for a great place to spend some time with your friends, family, or visiting guests this holiday season, come to Gateway to Science!
As we enjoy this mild December, Gateway to Science encourages potential camp instructors to start thinking about their summer plans! We expect to be building our schedule of summer camps over the next few months, and we would like to hear program proposals from community members who enjoy working with and teaching children, whether or not you are a formally trained educator. More details can be found on this page, or by contacting Meredith. What do YOU have to offer to the eager learners in our community while they are on summer break 2012? Share your area of expertise with us!
Campers, we’ll have more information for you this spring!
