Leap Day

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Science ExcitementToday, February 29, is Leap Day, making 2012 a Leap Year! Have you wondered why we have February 29 on the calendar some years, but not others? It’s not even strictly every 4 years! It all has to do with Earth’s journey around the sun. It doesn’t take exactly 365 days to orbit…but it doesn’t take exactly 365 1/4 days, either.

Check out this BBC News article for more facts and fun about Leap Day!

Gateway to Science recently participated as an exhibitor at the NDSTA gathering of science educators. As a bonus for stopping by our table, we encouraged educators to register to win an Educator’s Membership. And the winner is…..Ashley Patterson of Bismarck Sunrise Elementary School. Congratulations Ashley!

The North Dakota Science Teachers Association is holding its annual conference in Bismarck this weekend. Science teachers from around the state are gathering at the Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy for the 2012 Spring Conference entitled, “North Dakota Science: Building a Sustainable Global Community.” Conference sessions will feature a wide variety of topics that will help teachers get even better at preparing students for their futures.

Gateway to Science is one of the vendors at the conference, which allows us to visit with teachers about the hands-on nature of our exhibits gallery and other resources we can provide. We are also offering a drawing for a FREE Educator’s Club Membership! There are informative sessions happening in many classrooms in the building, and in the exhibition hall, we are treated to a robotics demonstration by high school students preparing for national competition. There’s excitement in the air, and it’s all about science!

Preschool Discovery Hour, Science Discovery Club, and Young Scientists Club will not meet February 18-21 as our educational programs observe Presidents’ Day Weekend. The Gateway to Science office will also be closed on Monday, February 20, in observance of the holiday. However, the gallery will maintain its usual hours of 12-7 Monday-Thursday, and 12-5 Friday-Saturday, so come explore with us if you have the time over the long weekend! And for those of you in clubs, we will start up again next week, February 25-28.
