Curious about Curiosity?
Posted by: | Comments
Curiosity may have killed the cat, but its new mission is to find habitable land on Mars. The newest rover, named Curiosity for its searching abilities, is set to land on Mars next week. While one of NASA’s greatest challenges has been to search for water on Mars, its newest rover will search for more than just this precious liquid. Previous missions have allowed Curiosity’s new job to be a bit easier, but its main mission will be to search about climate, geology, human exploration, and if the possibility of previous life existed. They want to see if the climate and geology of Mars made the evolution of life a possibility, based on what environment Mars hosted. The opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics will be July 27, 2012. There is just something about the Olympics that brings out the pride you have in your country. You gather around the tv, or computer these days, to watch your favorite sport or athletes. You want to know all about what makes the sport “tick” and how the athletes have grown and got to the Olympics. Science plays a big part in the Olympics these days, just ask the swimmers about their gear! The Smithsonian Magazine has recently published several articles about the London 2012 Olympics. They offer a bit of history, science and news that will inform and possibly even fascinate you! Gateway to Science hopes you enjoy this Olympic season!

Rest In Peace, Sally Ride

Sally Ride , the first U.S. woman in space passed away on July 23, 2012. She made history in 1983 when she traveled on the space shuttle Challenger as the first female crew member. Following her space endeavors she went on to create Sally Ride Science, an educational venture aimed at promoting math and science for girls. She also continued to work on special projects with the NASA space program including the investigations into the losses of the space shuttle Challenger and space shuttle Columbia. She became an inspiration to so many girls (this one included!) looking at a future in the sciences. For more information on Sally Ride click here.

What a Blast!

With over 120 visitors in attendance Family Rocket Day 2012 was a blast! This free family event, sponsored by Gateway to Science, has come to be one of our largest attended events of the summer. There was a little bit of rocket fun for all ages. Water rockets, air pressure rockets, alka-selzer rockets and more kept everyone busy. Pat Riepl helped out by launching the engine-propelled rockets and he also shared a few of his own rocket creations. The countdown has already begun to Family Rocket Day 2013!
Gateway to Science’s next free family event will be Bubble Bliss on Saturday, August 11 from 1PM-4PM.
Farewell Krypto
Posted by: | Comments
Krypto, resident bearded dragon of Gateway to Science, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Many guests and staff will remember Krypto as the dragon with an attitude. At approximately 9 years old he had his own way of communicating; if he didn’t want anyone around, a quick swat would deter unwanted pests. If he wanted some TLC, some loving eyes in your direction would be his cue. Krypto not only was a pet, but a large part of our education in the gallery. Students would gather around and watch as Krypto ate. They learned about the diet and his natural habitat. This cold-blooded critter had a great molting stage this past winter, and students were fascinated at how his skin would “renew” and the pieces that were left behind to be studied. Krypto has been returned to his previous owner for his final resting home and we are thankful for the joy he brought to us all!
