DIY Nano!

Have some big fun with small science at home! The Lawrence Hall of Science has developed a free app called DIY Nano. It is available from the iTunes App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The DIY Nano app allows families to experience and learn about nanoscale science, engineering, and technology at home or on the go. Each activity includes lists of widely available, inexpensive materials, step-by-step instructions, and detailed explanations. All DIY Nano activities are also available for download as PDFs from whatisnano.org under the DIY tab. Gateway to Science is also offering its first ever Nano Camp this July! So go ahead, explore this small, small world!

Preschool Discovery Hour Final Four
Posted by: | Comments
Our Preschool Discovery Hour is ending soon! We are down to our final four sessions. The upcoming sessions from 10:30am-11:30am on Saturdays include an hour of Gallery Exploration, “Bubble Trouble”, “Wind and it’s Power”, and “Butterflies Are Here!.” I have had so much fun creating and instructing 15 sessions of Preschool Discovery Hour this session. We are unable to offer preschool activities in the summer but we look forward to starting up another great year of Preschool Discovery Hour next fall! Also don’t forget to attend our free family summer events, including the Sound of Science, June 9th.

Gateway to Science Announces Staff Changes
Posted by: | Comments
Gateway to Science is pleased to announce the recent restructuring of our Outreach Program. A new “team approach” will provide additional staffing and expertise to allow us to reach even more children and families. Outreach includes everything from the exhibits gallery to clubs and camps to special family events. Gateway to Science serves approximately 12,000 visitors and program participants each year, so you can imagine how much effort is involved in outreach! This exciting restructuring has resulted in the promotion of one employee and the addition of another.

Meredith Traeholt has been promoted to Program Coordinator. Meredith was hired in May 2011 as Program Assistant, working closely with Christie Weixel until Christie’s resignation last summer. As Program Coordinator, Meredith will be responsible for the exhibits gallery as well as planning and presenting special events. She is currently working on all the exciting family events coming up this summer, including The Sound of Science, Family Rocket Day and Bubble Bliss.

Arin Casavant has been hired to fill the new position of Educational Outreach Coordinator with the responsibility of outreach to schools and teachers and planning out of school time (OST) educational opportunities for students of all ages. You may already know Arin as our Young Scientists Club and Preschool Discovery Hour leader. In addition to organizing 12 Gateway to Science camps this summer, Arin will also be out in the community at events like Summer Reading Kickoff and Urban Harvest.
Although Meredith and Arin each have their own areas of responsibility, they will also work together on many aspects of programming. We expect great things from this outstanding team!
