pfz-blog-legos

I came across this picture earlier this week. What a powerful image! To society, Legos® have become a toy for “boys”. However, what child does not like playing with Legos®, boy or girl? Pink Legos® do not mean they are ”girl-friendly”. Any color Lego® is meant for both GIRLS and BOYS.  Gateway to Science invites you to get rid of this stereotype. Sign your girl up for any of our Lego® Explorer camps this summer.

Gateway to Science is offering a Legos® for Girls camp August 5-7 from 1-4:30 daily. This is a camp designed exclusively for girls. Don’t expect pink Legos®!  Instead, we are offering a setting that is exclusively for the builder in all females. The camp is not intended to single out females, but instead to allow the opportunity to not be the “only girl” having fun in the room! If you are entering grades 3-6 this coming fall, you do not want to miss this camp! Register by following this link.

Happy Building,

ot-081002-hazel-johnstonNow that Preschool Discovery Hour is over for the summer, what do you do with your preschooler? Gateway to Science has the answer! Visit our gallery during any of our normal business hours and request an Early Childhood exploration sheet. It will allow you and your preschooler to enrich the gallery experience by exploring your five senses inside our gallery. The Five Senses is a standard that is used in the school setting for both Preschool and Kindergarten. Your exploration in our gallery will help reinforce this concept. The exploration sheet is as easy as drawing pictures of things they see that demonstrate a property of one of the five senses. This guided experience will also help preschoolers stay focused during your visit.SuperBoy

Gateway to Science also has traveling science trunks for your preschooler. For $10, you can check out a traveling science trunk with various topics in mind. Force and Motion, Butterflies, Five Senses, States of Matter, and more are available at your fingertips. Email arin@gscience.org for more information. Follow this link to read about the different options online.

For some FREE fun, bring your preschooler to ANY of our family events this summer. Weather You Wanna’ Know, Rocket Day, and Bubble Bliss are FREE events that are appropriate for ALL ages. Follow the links above to visit details about each event.

Exploring the outdoors with your child is the GREATEST education you can offer. Share in your observations and watch them explore their surroundings in wonder. Self-discovery can be a powerful tool!

Happy learning,

On Monday, April 29, Bismarck Public School 4-6 grade students had the opportunity to be introduced to Lego Mindstorm NXT robots and programming. This workshop was in a collaboration with Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy. Due to the joint effort, the workshop was presented for FREE to all 25 students who participated. We had many Bismarck schools represented at this great event. Students learned about basic programming, troubleshooting, and cooperation in a group setting.

View our video below for some highlights of the workshop!

Pan-STARRS Comet path, from the SETI Institute.

Pan-STARRS Comet path, from the SETI Institute.

The Pan-STARRS Comet will be visible to the naked eye tonight in Western North Dakota. The best opportunity for viewing the stellar display of this beautiful comet begins with finding a spot where you can see all the way down to the Western horizon. About half an hour before sunset, find the moon. The moon is currently in the waxing crescent phase, displaying only approximately 6% of its total surface area. Holding your arm straight out, use the width of your fist to trace about 10 degrees to the West of the moon in order to find the approximate location of the comet, barely above the horizon.

Pan-STARRS is a ball of icy dirt, hurtling through space about 100 million miles from Earth as it passes through our inner solar system. It was discovered in June 2011 using the Pan-STARRS Telescope on the island of Hawaii. Its predicted brightness is a +2 or +3 magnitude, however recent changes have caused the predicted magnitude to be shifted to about +1. For more information on magnitude, visit the Space.com article by clicking here. The comet will only be visible without a telescope tonight in the Western North Dakota skies, however, it has been and will continue to be visible by telescope over then next few months in various areas of the world.

In case you don’t get a chance to get out and see it yourself, this is a time lapse video by Fred Espenak from last night’s display. Also, here are pictures of the comet captured all over the world.

Chem Demo 2011The North Dakota Science Teachers Association will meet in Bismarck for their annual conference this weekend, and tonight they will gather at Gateway to Science for registration, networking and of course, exploring the exhibits in our gallery! A short presentation about the Girls Collaborative Project will be presented by Carrie Leopold, NDSU.

The conference continues on Friday and Saturday morning at the Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy. This annual event is a great opportunity for North Dakota teachers to learn new methods of presenting science for students in a relevant and engaging way. It’s exciting for us to be part of this gathering, and Gateway to Science welcomes you!
