Gateway to Science and the ND Society of Professional Engineers, Chapter 3 will host the annual WIDGET Contest and Explore Engineering on Tuesday, February 7 beginning at 5:30PM. Both events are FREE and will be held at the Bismarck Career Academy located at 1221 College Drive.
Explore Engineering is a fun and exciting hands-on engineering event for elementary age students. Children can design and build their own creations at each of the the stations. Students will get their creative juices flowing like real engineers!
The WIDGET Contest will commemorate National Engineers Week. Nine teams of local middle and high school students will follow their own original designs to build machines that will achieve this year’s challenge – to knock over a pyramid of cups. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. The public is invited to watch the competition and cheer for their favorite team!

Winter Wonderland was Wonderful!

Gateway to Science recently hosted Winter Wonderland, and what a wonder it was! The weather may not have cooperated with our outdoor stargazing but indoors there was discovery happening all around. The discovery stations and StarLab were popular attractions to the young and the young at heart. Our guest, Dr. Jack Bacon, gave presentations on creativity and science, plus he will also be taking part in the Energy Generation Conference and Visiting Scientists Series right here in Bismarck this week.

Dr. Jack Bacon will speak on “The Parallel Bang” on Monday, January 23, at University of Mary’s Arno Gustin Hall beginning at 7 PM. Dr Bacon is one of the world’s most popular speakers on technology and the factors that shape human society. In his daily work, he is on the management team overseeing the construction and operation of the most complicated technical project in history: the International Space Station. He is the author of three popular books; My Grandfathers’ Clock, My Stepdaughter’s Watch and The Parallel Bang.

Dr. Bacon’s presentation is FREE and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Visiting Scientists Series, which includes representatives from Bismarck State College, Bismarck Public Schools, Gateway to Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, St. Mary’s Central High School, USGS, The University of Mary, and the ND Society of Professional Engineers.

Winter Wonderland is ready to launch! Join us on, Saturday, January 21, 6:00-8:30 pm, for fun space and astronomy activities, an indoor StarLab planetarium, outdoor stargazing (weather permitting), cookies and hot cocoa. Also featured is well-known futurist, technological historian, and NASA Systems Engineer Dr. Jack Bacon, who will speak about creativity and science. Dr. Bacon will be in Bismarck for several presenations as part of the Energy Generation Conference and Visiting Scientists Series.

Gateway to Science’s Winter Wonderland 2012 will be here in just 8 days! Mark Saturday, January 21 on your calendar, all the discovery happens from 6PM-8:30PM. Bowling Tournament This Weekend

It’s not too late to register a team for the annual Farwest Rotary Frames for Funds bowling tournament. This annual event benefits Gateway to Science, God’s Child Project and the New Generations Park. It will be at Midway Lanes in Mandan this Saturday, January 14, with check-in beginning at 12:30. Teams of 4 can register for $125, which includes three games of bowling and free food. Whether your bowling is considered to be good, bad, or ugly, register and play for fun and a good cause!

Widget Contest Registrations Open

Attention students in grades 9-12: this is your chance to come up with the most convoluted method you can think of to knock over a pyramid of cups! Registration is now open for the 2012 Widget Contest, sponsored by Gateway to Science and the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers, Chapter 3. Prizes this year are $200 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place, and $75 for 3rd place. Do you think you could be a contender? Form a team of 3-6 people, fill out a registration form, and pick up your kit at Gateway to Science to get started!

Teachers Receive Arts in Education Grant

Gateway to Science congratulates the teachers who received $275 Teacher Incentive grants from the North Dakota Council on the Arts. They will all be attending “‘da Genius daVinci” at Frances Leach High Prairie Arts & Science Complex with their classrooms in February. The 1st and 2nd grade teachers are from Northridge Elementary and Miller Elementary: Lindsay Hoff, Holly Johnson, Sarah Skiple, Nicole Walker, Kimberly Hysjulien, Christina Jahner, Maria Neset, Jennifer Walz, Jan Engbrecht and Sue McClenning.

Widget Contest Announced!

The task for the 2012 Widget Contest, taking place February 7 and sponsored by Gateway to Science and the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers, Chapter 3, has just been announced! This year’s task is to knock over a pyramid of three cups. The three cups must be in a standard pyramid formation to start, and all three cups must be knocked off their rims by an impact, not just moved or pulled apart. Teams can register and pick up their box of materials, including more specific guidelines for the contest, between January 5 and January 25.
