Environmental Festival 2013

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Gateway to Science hosted the first day of our 14th annual Environmental Festival today, and the festival continues tomorrow, March 14. Over 1,200 students and teachers registered – from seven cities and five counties in North Dakota! Schools within a 100-mile radius of Bismarck were invited to participate in this event that encourages students to look at their ecological footprint and help plan for a sustainable future.

Environmental Festival is made possible by generous sponsors including AE2S, Basin Electric Power Coop, Bismarck State College, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation, Great River Energy, MDU ECO Fund, ND Chapter of American Water Works Association, ND Forest Service, ND Water Environment Association, Roughrider Electric Coop and Tesoro. Our presenters are environmental scientists who engage students in hands-on activities to explore many aspects of the environment. Volunteers from RSVP+ guide the classes through their presentations and assist the presenters as needed. An event like Environmental Festival simply wouldn’t happen without this kind of dedication! Below are a few photos from our first day.

Lute making 101!

‘da Genius daVinci held it’s first day of events with Leonardo daVinci himself dropping by for a visit! The partners of the Frances Leach High Prairie Arts & Science Complex come together to host this event for area 1st and 2nd graders. Each class had already studied a bit about daVinci before they arrived and so they were ready for some hands-on learning about the artist, engineer, musician, and all around fabulous renaissance man. There were lutes, robo-copters, dancing and singing throughout the building. A special thanks to the classes of Pioneer and Roosevelt Elementary Schools  for getting our first day off to a great start.

Field Trip Season

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Field Trips are in full swing here at the Gallery. Groups as large as 75 kids at a time have been learning and exploring all the hands-on exhibits that we feature, with ages ranging from preschool up to pre-service teachers from the different local colleges. We have seen groups from Minot, including their Science Olympiad Team, to New Rockford, Wilton, and even several large groups from different areas of South Dakota, including McIntosch and McLaughlin. Students have travelled many hours just to visit our gallery, and they love the experience!

Some of our favorite quotes this spring from the students:

“Thank you for the visit. I liked the heart vs. hand!!!!!” -Abbigail

“I liked the shadow thing, the heart vs. hand, and the electric ball. Thank you for letting us come.” -Jason

“My favorite part was when I got to see the brains and feel what it would feel like.” -Zelda

“Thank you for teaching me about science.” -Robynn

At Gateway, we LOVE seeing children exploring in our gallery. We would love to see more groups in here through the summer. Even if you are not a classroom, we offer great GROUP RATES. Don’t miss out on the excellent learning experience this summer. Call us at 258-1975 to set up your appointment today!

Environmental Festival at the Science Center! This morning we had 5th graders from Prairie Rose Elementary, Northridge Elementary, and Bob Callies Elementary from Garrison attending our 12th Annual Environmental Festival! At the BSC Jack Science Center, Christie is very busy as well, welcoming many more elementary schools! To our presenters, thankyou! The festival continues this afternoon with more 5th graders!

In another note, the Butterfly Exhibit is back! It’s Butterfly Time! Painted Lady butterflies have arrived to Gateway to Science and are enjoying the early sunshine in the exhibit gallery.
