STEM Pays!

Gateway to Science supports and encourages STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) education. The Association of Science-Techonolgy Centers recently shared the following information about STEM education with their members:
STEM pays: According to new data released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau, those with an associate’s degree in a STEM field earn more than those with a bachelor’s degree in education or liberal arts. An adult with an associate’s degree in engineering earned an average of $4,800 monthly in 2009; someone with a bachelor’s degree in education earned an average of $3,800. Engineering is the most popular field of study, with about 4.5 million adults earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Of the estimated 56 million Americans with at least a bachelor’s degree, about 19.6 million, or 35 percent, have a degree in a STEM field. And while men still outnumber women in STEM fields, the gap appears to be narrowing: Among people age 25-39, women hold about 1 in 5 engineering degrees; between ages 40-65, they hold only 1 in 10. Bismarck Welcomes Science Teachers

The North Dakota Science Teachers Association is holding its annual conference in Bismarck this weekend. Science teachers from around the state are gathering at the Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy for the 2012 Spring Conference entitled, “North Dakota Science: Building a Sustainable Global Community.” Conference sessions will feature a wide variety of topics that will help teachers get even better at preparing students for their futures.
Gateway to Science is one of the vendors at the conference, which allows us to visit with teachers about the hands-on nature of our exhibits gallery and other resources we can provide. We are also offering a drawing for a FREE Educator’s Club Membership! There are informative sessions happening in many classrooms in the building, and in the exhibition hall, we are treated to a robotics demonstration by high school students preparing for national competition. There’s excitement in the air, and it’s all about science!
