This is the time of year when the majority of charitable donations are made in this country. At Gateway to Science, we tend to avoid sending a year-end appeal for a few reasons: 1) Our biggest fundraiser, Einstein on Wine, is just completed; 2) Giving Hearts Day is just around the corner; and 3) We take a step back from more “humanitarian” needs that are highlighted by the season. However, that doesn’t mean that we don’t need donations at this time of year! Gateway to Science is, after all, a nonprofit organization, and therefore dependent on the generosity of our contributors.
If you are looking for a way to support a worthy nonprofit and potentially realize tax benefits, I hope that you will consider Gateway to Science in your end-of-year contributions. Our online contribution process is simple – just visit our website and click on “Donate with Impact.” You will be directed to our donation page on the Impact Foundation website, which offers nonprofits a secure way to process electronic donations. We have four different funds set up on this site:
- General Fund – supports operating costs associated with our exhibits gallery, programs and events.
- Dave & DeLaine Poppke Scholarship Fund – established to provide scholarships for students in our camps and workshops.
- Endowment Fund – created to provide long-term sustainability for the organization (more detail below).
- Capital Campaign Fund – will be used to fund the new science center project.
Of course, you don’t have to donate online. Donations are welcome in any form – in person, via mail, etc., and at any time of year.
Endowment Fund: The 2011 North Dakota Legislature passed a law that allows tax credits for individuals and businesses who give specific types of gifts to North Dakota charities like Gateway to Science Center Endowment Fund. Businesses (C corporations, S corporations, estates, limited liability companies, trusts, and financial institutions) that pay ND income tax may take a 40% credit up to a total of $10,000 for gifts to the qualified endowment fund of a qualified North Dakota charity. The Gateway to Science Center Endowment Fund is qualified under this law.
Individuals may receive a state tax credit for a contribution for $5,000 or more (lump sum or aggregate in one year) to a qualified North Dakota endowment. The tax credit is 40% of the charitable deduction allowed by the IRS up to a maximum credit of $10,000 per year per taxpayer or $20,000 per year per couple filing jointly. The tax credits may be carried forward for 3 additional tax years if it cannot all be used in one year. You can find more information on our Endowment Fund webpage, or contact me at 701-258-1975.
I appreciate your support – whether you choose to donate or become members, visit our science center or attend our family events, bring your children to our educational programs or simply share our news of upcoming events – it’s all important! We appreciate your commitment to furthering our mission of inspiring the discovery of science through hands-on experiences!
Wishing you and your family the best of the season!
