Today, we welcomed community members, partners, and supporters to celebrate the ribbon cutting for the Outdoor Explorium—a space designed to enhance STEM offerings through hands-on experiences with the natural world.
“The Outdoor Explorium will enhance STEM offerings in our gallery and programs through nature exploration in informal, hands-on, and genuine interactions, “said CEO Beth Demke. “This project was planned from the very beginning because we believe that learning doesn’t stop at the door.”
A Partnership Rooted in Community
Developed with generous support from the MDU Resources Foundation, the Outdoor Explorium reflects a shared commitment to creating engaging public spaces. MDU representatives Cory Fong and Nikki Ferderer joined us for the celebration. Cory noted the space not only adds to Gateway to Science’s programming but also connects beautifully with the nearby trail system, walking paths, and parks—further enriching Bismarck’s outdoor experiences.
Bringing the Explorium to life took the hard work of contractors, volunteers, and staff, with coordination led by STEM Educator Annie Beck. “In this new space,” Annie shared, “children and adults can work together to discover lifelong lessons of caring for and conserving our environment. In the assorted gathering areas, we envision many opportunities for learning and entertainment for all ages.”
Just beyond the Explorium’s fence line, visitors can enjoy a pollinator garden led by NDSU Extension Master Gardeners, under the direction of Connie Spryczynatyk. The archway and winding path invite guests to wander and observe the plants, bees, butterflies, and birds that bring the garden to life.
What’s Coming Next
There’s more currently in the works, including:
-
A mosaic mural by local artist Paul Noot, taking shape on the greenhouse wall, which will celebrate North Dakota’s pollinators, wildflowers, and crops—adding a creative and colorful layer to the outdoor learning experience.
-
A custom-built excavator designed by Bobcat, which will be installed later this month and offer a hands-on way for children to explore engineering, hydraulics, and machine design.
Campers First, Community Next
While the full public launch of the Explorium is coming later this summer, once the excavator is in place, the space is already buzzing with activity. It’s currently being used by summer campers, who will be among the first to explore and test future programs.
Come Take a Walk—And a Peek at What’s Growing
The pollinator garden is already open and buzzing with activity—native plants blooming, butterflies fluttering, and bees busy at work. Visitors can stroll the path, enjoy the view, and catch a glimpse of what’s taking shape inside the Outdoor Explorium. With new features unfolding each week, it’s a space that invites discovery even as it continues to grow.
As Beth reminded us today, “Nature is a powerful teacher.” We’re excited to keep growing this space—where curiosity, observation, and wonder are a constant.
