Grandparents play a special role in the lives of children as storytellers, role models, and companions. At North Dakota’s Gateway to Science, we see firsthand how learning becomes more powerful when it’s shared across generations. Science isn’t only about experiments and exhibits; it’s about connection, curiosity, and creating lasting memories together.
On Sunday, September 7, we celebrated Grandparents Day with an afternoon of exploration, laughter, and hands-on fun. From the moment families walked through the doors, the gallery was filled with energy. Grandparents and grandchildren tried puzzles, tested experiments, and shared stories while discovering new things side by side.
All around the gallery, kids proudly took the lead—pointing out exhibits, explaining how things worked, and showing off their favorite STEM activities. Some visitors were pleasantly surprised to find the celebration waiting for them, and kids were quick to make their grandparents feel extra special. Visitor Guide Ava described the scene best:
“It was so fun to see all the excited children showing their grandparents around. One child told me it was more fun now because she got to go with her grandma and show her all her favorite exhibits.”
Whether it was tackling a tricky brain teaser or laughing together at the ball launcher, the day reminded us that play and discovery are ageless.
A Place to Connect Across Generations
Grandparents Day at Gateway to Science was more than just an event—it was a celebration of connection. Every family left with new memories, and many grandparents left with a new appreciation for how STEM learning can bring them closer to their grandkids. It’s a reminder that curiosity never retires, and that discovery is something we can enjoy at every stage of life.
