This week, as we celebrate National Aviation Day, there’s no better way to mark the occasion than by experiencing the thrill of flight at North Dakota’s Gateway to Science! Our flight simulator lets visitors of all ages explore the fundamentals of flying, from takeoff and landing to advanced maneuvers.
What to Expect
Each flight session lasts about 10 minutes and is facilitated by our staff:
- Learn Aviation Basics: Get familiar with terms like pitch, roll, and yaw while using the yoke of a Cessna 172 Skyhawk.
- Takeoff & Landing: Practice essential skills and build confidence.
- Advanced Aircraft: Try the Extra 300 (“Red Bull”) or an F-22 Raptor for a thrill.
- Challenges & Landmarks: Fly through snow or thunderstorms, and see landmarks like the Statue of Liberty or Eiffel Tower.
What Our Staff Say
Sri: “I feel the flight simulator helps kids discover their passion for flying… It also teaches the science behind flying, and we are able to help answer the questions they might have about the flight simulator to help them learn.”
EmmaKay: “I think the flight simulator is a very nice addition to the gallery, especially with North Dakota being a very aviation-oriented state… I would have loved to have this as a kid!”
Paul: “The flight simulator is not going to make our visitors pilots, but it is going to show them how to become a pilot and what some of the basics of flying an airplane are. At the end of the flying session about 50% of the kids say they want to be a pilot. The other 50% say they never want to be a pilot. It is a good way for them to see if they like it.”
Sofia: “I like it when kids are interested in the flight simulator and ask how the different things work, understanding it is not a video game. The pilots also say it is very accurate, so it is close to real life. It is very cool to have the flight simulator at Gateway to Science! It feels gratifying to be able to fly.”
Aurora H.: “The flight simulator gives everyone an opportunity to have their childhood dream of being a pilot come true! So many people say: I’ve always wanted to be a pilot or to fly a plane!”
