This summer at Gateway to Science, our elementary summer camps sparked curiosity, built confidence, and fueled creativity in young scientists. Every week brought new opportunities for kids to explore, experiment, and discover—without the pressure of grades or tests.

Encouraging Curiosity (and a Little Failure)

At the start of each week, we taught campers an important lesson: it’s okay to fail. In fact, we encourage it! Mistakes are an integral part of learning and growth for scientists. Watching our educators guide students through experiments and prove that ‘impossible’ challenges can become possible was a highlight of the summer, leaving kids with a sense of accomplishment, confidence, and the joy of discovery.

Sparking Interest in Flight

Thanks to resources and hands-on tools from Civil Air Patrol, campers explored the basics of aerodynamics and flying. Students did activities that helped them understand flight principles while building excitement for science in action. Many campers discovered a love for exploring how things move, lift, and soar—sometimes for the very first time!

Projects That Inspire

One of the most exciting parts of camp was seeing how deeply kids engaged in project-based learning. From building experiments and testing flight principles to mixing reactions and presenting their creations, campers spent entire mornings fully immersed in something new. Many even shared their projects with other groups, proudly explaining their discoveries and inspiring their peers.

Parents and guardians consistently shared how much they appreciated that our camps meet students where they are, both academically and emotionally. By making STEM approachable and less intimidating, we gave children the confidence to try new things, ask questions, and take risks—all while having tons of fun.
