We’re always looking for ways to bring science to life through real-world applications and interactive learning. Our newest addition—the Tempest Weather Station—does exactly that.
The Tempest Weather Station is an on-site data collection station, allowing us to capture real-time, hyper-local weather data right here at the science center. This compact, high-tech system tracks key weather conditions like temperature, wind, barometric pressure, lightning, and rainfall.
Linking Live Data to Hands-On Learning
The data collected by the weather station enhances the visitor experience in our Weather All Around Us exhibits, making real-time science part of every visit. Visitors can even view the live data from any mobile device as they explore the gallery. At the KFYR Weather Desk, guests can use actual live data from our rooftop station to read weather patterns, analyze current conditions, and try their hand at forecasting. It’s a fun, hands-on way to understand the science behind weather reports.
Becoming Part of a National Network
With the Tempest system installed, Gateway to Science is now part of a nationwide network of weather stations. This national network improves local forecasts and supports broader research on climate and atmospheric trends. By joining this network, we’re not only enriching our exhibit experience—we’re helping advance scientific understanding on a broader scale.
“I am so excited about this collaboration with Tempest and the opportunities it will bring to spark interest and learning about our weather and climate for our guests and community!” —Annie Beck, STEM Educator at Gateway to Science
