We’re hosting a Prairie Walk Series this summer. It’s one of those experiences that’s simple in the best way—easy walk, good people, and a chance to slow down and notice what’s been around you all along. If you’ve ever driven past a stretch of prairie and thought, “I wish I knew what I was looking at,” this is for you.

What To Expect
Folks from Pheasants Forever and the Society for Range Management guide the walk. They can point at something you’d normally walk right past and suddenly make it interesting. You’ll learn how to spot different grasses and prairie plants, notice bird nests you would’ve missed, and start to understand how everything fits together.
On our Prairie Walks, you’ll smell different plants, feel textures, and sometimes even taste something growing nearby (when it’s safe to do so).
Super Easy, No Pressure
This isn’t a hike you have to “prepare” for. We’ll have binoculars you can use, but you’re welcome to bring your own.
It’s:
- Easy and relaxed
- Open to all ages
- Usually about an hour
- Totally fine to come and go as you need
When and Where
- June 30 – Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory (Mandan)
- July 28 – Harmon Lake (Mandan)
- August 25 – North Dakota’s Gateway to Science
We’ll meet in the main parking lot each time. Come to one walk or all three. Bring a friend, bring your kids, or just come solo and enjoy an evening outside. Visit the Calendar of Events to find out more.
