If you’ve visited the Outdoor Explorium over the last year, you may have noticed a mosaic taking shape on the greenhouse.
That work is now complete. Created by local artist Paul Noot, the finished mural brings together North Dakota crops, pollinators, native plants, and prairie landscapes in an intricate, permanent installation. It adds a new focal point to the space and a new way to experience the connection between art, science, and the environment.

A Reflection of North Dakota
The mosaic draws directly from the landscapes and ecosystems that define North Dakota.
You’ll find familiar elements throughout. Sunflowers, corn, wheat, and honey appear alongside pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds.
There are details you might not catch right away, too. The western meadowlark, North Dakota’s state bird, appears within a backdrop of prairie grasses, open sky, and landforms that reflect the view from the science center itself.
Connected to What’s Growing Here

What’s represented in the mosaic reflects what’s happening in this space.
Many of the elements featured in the mural can be observed in the Outdoor Explorium’s pollinator garden, where bees, butterflies, and other pollinators feed and rest. It creates a direct connection between the artwork and the living environment around it.
Nearby, smart bird feeders offer another way to observe and learn about local bird species that share the space.
Part of the Outdoor Explorium Experience
The mosaic adds another layer to how visitors experience the Outdoor Explorium.
Whether it’s a camp exploring pollination, a school group learning about ecosystems, or families spending time outdoors together, the mural helps ground those experiences in something visible and local. It supports hands-on learning that connects science to everyday life in North Dakota.
