This spring at Preschool Discovery Hour, our youngest scientists and their caregivers explored coding, insects, and outer space through hands-on STEM experiences. Each month, we encouraged children to investigate, create, problem-solve, and discover how science and technology connect to the world around them!
March: Bugging Out
In March, Preschool Discovery Hour was buzzing with excitement as children explored the fascinating world of insects and other creepy crawlies. Through observation, building, sensory exploration, and movement, children learned about bug life cycles, habitats, pollination, and the unique features that help insects survive.
Preschoolers explored:
• Investigating bugs using microscopes and magnifying tools
• Matching butterfly and insect life cycles
• Building imaginative insects with engineering materials
• Exploring pollination by moving “pollen” between flowers
• Creating bug habitats and bug hotels
April: Curious Coders
In April, children discovered that coding is all around us. Through movement, robots, and pattern-based play, preschoolers learned that coding is simply giving clear, step-by-step instructions to solve problems.
Children explored:
• Programming Sphero Indi robots to complete simple tasks
• Acting out coding commands as “human robots”
• Sequencing cards to build step-by-step instructions
• Exploring patterns, loops, and problem-solving through play
May: To the Moon and Back
In May, Preschool Discovery Hour launched into outer space as children became astronauts, engineers, and moon explorers. Through sensory play and hands-on building challenges, they explored what it might be like to travel beyond Earth.
Young explorers:
• Built and tested Moon landers
• Created craters and explored lunar surfaces
• Designed space habitats for astronauts
• Investigated planets, stars, and constellations
• Launched fizzy rockets and created “Moon rocks”
