North Dakota’s Gateway to Science is partnering with the Society for Science to expand research-based learning opportunities for educators and students.
Through the North Dakota Fellows program, middle and high school STEM teachers are building new strategies for bringing authentic research into their classrooms. The program runs from June 2026 through May 2027.
Connecting Educators Across the State
The program includes five cohorts, with one based in Bismarck and four serving communities across North Dakota. Each cohort brings together 3–5 STEM teachers.
This structure creates space for educators to share ideas, learn from one another, and build connections with peers facing similar classroom challenges. It also helps extend professional learning beyond larger population centers.
For rural schools, access to specialized STEM opportunities can be especially valuable. By bringing educators into a statewide network, the program helps make research-focused professional development more accessible to communities throughout North Dakota.
Turning Research Into Classroom Learning
Throughout the program year, Fellows participate in professional development and monthly virtual meetings. They explore research strategies, develop project ideas, and connect investigations to the science they already teach.
Then, educators bring those experiences back to their classrooms. Students take part in research projects that encourage them to ask questions, investigate ideas, and apply what they are learning.
As a result, professional development creates benefits that extend beyond the educators participating in the program.
Building a Stronger STEM Network
The partnership between Gateway to Science and the Society for Science supports educators while strengthening connections between schools and communities.
Together, the organizations are helping create more opportunities for students to experience meaningful STEM learning, regardless of where they live.
By investing in teachers and connecting them with one another, North Dakota can continue growing a strong, collaborative STEM community from Bismarck to communities across the state.
